The Blue Grass, IA Community

Founded in 1853, Blue Grass was originally on an Indian trail between the Mississippi River and the Cedar River and a favored choice among the region’s first settlers for its prime camping spots.

Over the years, those that frequented the trail began to notice something strange—after a while, their horses had trampled most of the taller grass—and the newer grass that came to sprout and replace what once was had a bluish tint—which is what we now know as Kentucky bluegrass, and is one of many reasons why the city has the name it does today. The area became known as Blue Grass Point and as settlers began arriving in the area around 1836 (soon after building log cabins and farming the rich soil which sold for about $1.25 an acre) the community began to grow and establish itself.

In 1853, the village of Blue Grass (minus the “Point” part) was platted out by J.E. Burnside, John Perrin, and James Reynolds (and the streets were believed to be named after the wives of the founding fathers of Blue Grass). For example, some of the street names have unusual spellings (intentional or originally misspelled) like Mayne (Main) Street and Juniata (Juanita) Street. The township originated, as did the town, and was given the name “Blue Grass” when the post office was established in 1840.

The community as it stands today is kind, welcoming, and full of life. The cost of living in Blue Grass, Iowa is low, while the median household income is the highest in Iowa and the United States!
